HOME: ARTICLES: POOL HEATING: How to install a swimming pool bubble solar cover
So you want to install a solar bubble cover on your pool?
Great! A solar bubble cover is a great way to insulate your swimming pool and prevent heat from escaping. This article will show you how to install your bubble cover.

If you haven't purchased your bubble cover yet, be sure to read a related article: How to Measure Your Pool for a Solar Bubble Cover.

Requirements for the job:
  • Sharp pair of heavy duty scissors
  • Proper water level (half way up tile line)
Important Note: When handling your pool cover, always double up the material to protect against ripping.

Step 1: Carefully remove your new cover from the box, making sure to keep the warranty card included with the cover. Then clear a large space to avoid ripping the cover where you plan to begin unfolding it.

Step 2: Begin unfolding your cover, making sure that the bubbles are facing down and the smooth side is facing up. If you have the space, unfold the entire cover alongside the swimming pool, then slowly pull the cover over the pool's surface.

Step 3 After the pool cover is evenly over the pool surface, take some heavy objects that won't damage the cover and place them on all four corners of the pool (four total). This will keep the pool cover from changing its position while you begin making your preliminary cuts.

Step 4: Begin making your first cut on one corner of the pool, cutting a straight line into the cover, stopping at the top of the tile (3-4" above the water line). Continue cutting the cover around the perimeter of the pool, leaving cover excess curling up to the top of the tile.

Step 5: When you finish cutting around the entire perimeter of the pool, your cover should fit the general outline but still have about 3" of excess material. The reason we leave 3" of extra material is because over the next couple days, your cover will smoothen out on it's own and possibly contract slightly.

Step 6: After your cover has adjusted itself to the pool (2-3 days), you'll need to go back and trim off the extra material to make for a perfect fit. Cut slowly and be careful not to pull the cover towards you while cutting, as this will create a gap on the opposite side.
